Although I’m looking forward to spring/summer, I’ll be sad to see our backyard rink go. It’s been another great winter for outdoor skating and my two boys took full advantage. Despite getting his butt kicked by his older brother, my youngest son’s skating drastically improved over the last 3 months. No children were harmed during the filming of this video. Thanks to my wife Kelli for helping me shoot this past weekend and for putting up with my non-stop camera obsession. In this (quick cut style) video, either a person, object or thing is centered in every scene. Here’s a whole bunch of good ol’ Canadian hockey in under one minute. Crank it up on a good sound system or use headphones for a better overall viewing experience. Shot using a Blackmagic Pocket Camera, edited with FCPX and coloured with DaVinci Resolve. Roz Chast published her first cartoon in The New Yorker in 1978; since then, she’s had more than one thousand two hundred and seventy run in the magazine. On a blisteringly cold, recent winter morning, we rode the train to Connecticut and stepped inside her colorful and cartoon-filled home. A Girl’s Life is one of five stories from the In Kibera project, sharing stories of life and hope from East Africa’s largest slum. See all the stories at www.inkibera.com Eunice Akoth is a fourth grade student at the Kibera School for Girls. She has a passion for poetry, an aptitude for math, and a love of the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. She has lived all her life in Kibera, and though she is only ten years old, she dreams of traveling the world, from New York to Melbourne, before returning to Kenya and becoming a doctor. Though she has been lucky enough to receive a free education, and is celebrated as an exceptionally bright student by her teachers, she also represents the far-too-common case of a girl who must overcome extreme obstacles in order to find a path out of poverty.

Available in 4K, The Fire Within is a visceral, artistic study on the Big Island of Hawaii’s hyperactive Kilauea volcano. I was born and raised on the island and all my life up until last year I hadn’t had the chance to come face to face with her incredible presence. Many in Hawaii refer to the lava as ‘Pele’, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. After our incredible experiences at the volcano it’s not hard to see why so many islanders to this day see her as a living breathing thing. I wanted to capture her beauty and mysteriousness as well as her unimaginable power in the best way that I knew how. I wanted to just see it doing what it does. I shied away from any human interaction and turned the cameras to the fiery blood of the Earth. This six and a half minute film is my best attempt at capturing what it felt like to witness molten rock slowly burning down a dense wet rainforest or to peer into a six-hundred-foot-wide lava lake at Kilauea’s summit crater. I’ve never been anywhere else on the planet that demanded as much respect and awareness for the natural environment around me. Her unexpected beauty and unsettling sense of danger were nothing short of humbling and put so much into perspective. Kilauea really did change my life. Huge thanks to those who supported this film along the way, especially Wes and Stefan for contributing so much time and talent to make this thing what it is. Kilauea – The Fire Within was produced out of pocket and with complete creative freedom. Look up from the busy streets of New York City, and you might glimpse a flock of purebred pigeons swooping in circles around an abandoned tenement building in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Their aerial acrobatics are guided by their keeper, a streetwise Puerto Rican nicknamed 2Tone. On the other end of the borough, a man named Goodwin and his pal Super 13 tend their own pigeon coop and flock of 300 birds. Each man is trying to beat the other, to lure his birds away. It’s about bragging rights but it’s also about poetry, it’s about religion. It’s about finding that “true pigeon that will never break your heart,” as 2Tone says.
