Shot on 35mm Motion Picture Film, for ‘Lost My Faith’ is about family and the struggle for generations. As a solemn group of relatives congregate, their collective hardship, oppression and injustice are experienced vicariously through their spiritual young nephew, a boy figuring out his place in the world. Within family trees, viewpoints, traumas and complexes are passed down. To find our faith again, the video for ‘Lost My Faith’ asks, should we turn to or from our family? Olan Collardy’s 35mm cinematography brings texture to a story and frames an ambiguous timeline, with Olu Ebiti’s styling and Anna Baldini’s production design blending past and present. Landline | http://bit.ly/2JByvNi Landline is a short documentary about the only helpline in the UK for gay farmers. Through a series of recorded telephone conversations and reconstructive visuals, the film uses the helpline as a lens through which to view the experiences of LGBTQ people in the British farming community. In a world that prizes traditional masculinity and in which ideas of ancestry are fundamental, being gay can be isolating. Suicide rates are extremely high in both young farmers and gay men in particular, and combining these can be a recipe for tragedy. But there are also thriving gay scenes in the most rural of towns, stories of unexpected friendships and relationships, and moments so unlikely that they could only happen in real life. Candid, intimate and shocking, Landline is a snapshot of a group of people bound together by circumstance but so often isolated from each other. Most poisonous mushrooms won’t kill you—they’ll simply cause a severe headache or vomiting. Death-cap mushrooms are not like the others. As little as half an Amanita phalloides contains enough toxin to kill an adult human. Ingestion of the poison in death-cap mushrooms, known as amatoxin, is responsible for 90 percent of deaths related to mushroom poisoning worldwide. Worse still, death caps can resemble nontoxic mushrooms and are said to be quite tasty. You might not know you’ve been poisoned until days after eating the highly toxic fungi. While the mushrooms are historically endemic to Scandinavia and parts of northern Europe, the cultivation of non-native species of trees in North America has led to a “mushroom boom” in some areas of the continent. Life Up Close is a project of The Atlantic, supported by the HHMI Department of Science Education.
