If you are among the millions of listeners who have tuned in to Krista Tippett’s seminal public-radio show On Being—in which she engages scholars, writers, and others on spirituality and the fundamental questions of what it means to be a human—you may be surprised to hear she’s not big on the word “belief.” In this interview with Topic, recorded in early December 2018 from a studio in Cincinnati, Tippett talks about why she longs for a definition of faith and selfhood that isn’t quite so “neck up” and why too much investment in one’s own beliefs can actually be damaging. “If we only meet each other with ‘my facts versus your facts,’ ” she says, “we don’t have a human place to begin.” Animations by Andrew Khosravani More from our issue on Belief: http://bit.ly/2G9mrhe

Dan Pollard is a sound designer and composer. He helps out John at Acoustic arts, where he creates instruments from repurposed materials. He wanted to make a track from all the sound that happens in John’s workshop. We wanted to make a film that sums up the ethos of Acoustic Arts and their attitude to repurposed and recycled materials. The way we saw it was that all of the sound Dan uses, is sound that normally goes to waste in the workshop. We also saw this as a challenge to make use of everything we shot, so there’s very little visual waste. Even the offcuts and sound slates make an appearance in the film. Created with our good friend and DP, Dominic John, composer Dan Pollard and John Walls from Acoustic Arts (http://bit.ly/2Ggoy4m). Please share and recycle this film. SHADOWS OF BANGKOK | Short Film For this project I wanted to escape from the typical travel videos that are usually made, I didn’t want to make a tourism video and show the most famous part of the city, such as temples, Muay Thai, skyscrapers… I wanted to portray Bangkok in a cinematographic way, create a hypnotic, immersive and suggestive experience of the city through its faces, alleys, sound and music. This film created for OffsetDublin19 is a celebration of the creative – the creative mind and the place a creative inhabits The scarecrow is a symbol of creativity – all at once setting itself apart yet having a reason to be there. All creatives experience fear – yet this is not a film about fear. It’s about the fear people have to express themselves. It’s about being misunderstood. It’s about not quite fitting in. It’s about conflict, contradiction, challenge. You have to be different, yet the same, you have to be at the centre yet on the outside, you have to be macro and micro – yet creatives have the power, the capacity to imprint, observe, comment, shape, influence and inspire in so many ways.
